Below you will find a list of common questions and the corresponding answers.
Why do coaches and parent volunteers require a Criminal Record Check (CRC) and a Vulnerable Sectors Check (VSC)?
Whenever an individual is volunteering or coaching a minor or vulnerable individual it is best practice to have the individual screened through the RCMP with a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sectors Checks. WMHA uses the screens to support the safety of the minors in the association. The CRC and VSC for all coaches and parent volunteers are due to WMHA by October 1, 2020. If WMHA does not have the checks then the coach and/or parent volunteer will not be permitted to be involved with the minors of WMHA until the checks are completed.
Who should get a Criminal Record Check (CRC) and a Vulnerable Sectors Check (VSC)?
Any individual who would be in direct contact of minors as a part of WMHA must have a CRC and VSC completed.
Why can parent volunteers only be on the ice for a maximum of 10 practices in total throughout a hockey season?
WMHA must pay for insurance for all coaches for each hockey season. The cost of insurance for each coach is $50. If a parent volunteer is on the ice for more than 10 practices, he/she must complete all of the qualifications to be a coach and WMHA must ensure the coach has the necessary insurance to be on the ice.
Why can the players not use the dressing rooms?
CGC and the City of Whitehorse has not opened the dressing rooms for use and WMHA has to abide by the CGC’s rule for facility usage. WMHA is working with the staff of CGC to support the athletes.
Will there be an opportunity for players to play on what was known as the Development Teams in Peewee and Bantam?
Yes. Players who wish to try out for these teams will have an opportunity once all Mustang tryouts are complete.
Will Mustang teams have an opportunity to travel out of Yukon to play hockey?
This is unknown at this time. This depends on many factors that would be decided by Yukon CMOH and BC Hockey to both provide approval for WMHA to have teams travel out of Yukon for hockey. Should travel restrictions be lifted, this plan would allow Mustang teams to have practice and inter squad games together to allow for play out of Yukon.
Given the current travel restrictions, and the nature of the return to play everywhere (cohorts), it is unlikely that our Development or Mustangs teams will be able to travel this year. WHMA has come up with a plan that allows for players to compete with more similar skilled players, and to allow for additional practice and inter-squad with their team. This will also enhance the experience of the remaining players in each division. Having the Mustangs teams established and practicing will also allow that if travel restrictions and cohort requirements get loosened or removed and if there is potential for travel to tournaments or provincials, that the team will be prepared for that situation.
Why was it decided to have Mustangs be spread out throughout the division?
Due to Covid-19 restrictions and players only being allowed to play in one cohort, BC Hockey approved WMHA to allow a group of players to move up a division with the caveat that these players must be spread out amongst the teams. The Mustangs were not able to move up to play as a team as per BC Hockey.
Can the Development Teams play exhibition games against older divisions?
No. The Return to Play plan indicates that hockey players can only play games within one cohort. The Development Teams can play intersquad games as they are all in the same cohort.
If my player makes a Mustang team and is required to play up would my player be in a dressing room with older players?
At this time, due to Covid-19 restrictions and dressing rooms being unavailable no players can be in the dressing rooms. If dressing rooms open we will come up with a plan to address any issues -- this could include separate dressing areas or enhanced coach supervision at all times.
